Worsley Refinery Tour

Worsley Alumina, located 2 hours south of Perth in Western Australia, is a joint venture operation between BHP Billiton, Japan Alumina Associates and Sojitz Alumina, incorporating a bauxite mine, an alumina refinery and port facilities. Worsley is an industry leader in terms of production capacity and cost efficiency. Worsley’s outstanding and sustainable approach to health, safety, environment and community has been rewarded with the aluminium asset receiving the prestigious BHPBilliton CEO’s Sustainability Excellence Award for 2010.
As part of the refinery tour delegates will have the chance to view the results of Worsley’s Efficiency and Growth expansion project, due for completion in 2012. The project will see Worsley’s annual production capacity rise from 3.5 to 4.6 MTpa through expanded mining operations, additional refinery capacity and upgraded port facilities.’

Boddington Minesite Tour

The Boddington bauxite mine, located 2 hours south east of Perth in Western Australia, supplies bauxite ore to the Worsley Alumina refinery. Bauxite is mined from reserves mainly within State forest on the eastern edge of the Darling Range. The bauxite is crushed and carried 51km along the southern hemisphere’s longest conveyor system to the refinery. On the tour, participants will have the opportunity to view both a thriving mining operation and Worsley’s world-class mine rehabilitation programme.

CSIRO Waterford Tour

The CSIRO Waterford facilities has approximately 100 staff conducting research for the Australian and international minerals industries
. Most research focuses on hydrometallurgical issues related to the alumina, base metals, precious metals, uranium and other key mineral commodities. The site, known as the Australian Minerals Research Centre, also accommodates the headquarters of the Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Integrated Hydrometallurgy Solutions and Curtin University’s Western Australian School of Mines, as well as research staff from Direct Nickel, Evonik, Nalco Chemicals and Western Areas.
The tour will highlight mineral characterisation facilities, various laboratory-scale activities as well as some of the pilot-scale activities including the one-tonne per day Direct Nickel nitric acid process for nickel laterites.
