International Aluminium Institute (IAI) Bauxite Residue Storage and Management Best Practice Workshop

On behalf of the IAI, this workshop has been created to bring together operational and technical experts from the global alumina industry to discuss current and future bauxite residue management practices. The aim of the workshop is to identify a set of design and operational criteria that recognise and promote best practices for the sustainable management of bauxite residue storage facilities.

The workshop will provide an open forum where all stakeholders within the alumina refining industry and practitioners from all areas of bauxite residue management are invited to contribute. The key objective of the workshop is to gain agreement on best practices broadly applicable to residue management, with due consideration of storage methods, climatic conditions, regulatory requirements and residue characteristics.

The ultimate aim of the workshop is for attendees to identify design and operational best practices to ensure:
  • Minimal health, safety and environmental impacts from bauxite residue management operations - covering aspects such as liquor containment, dust control, residue distribution systems and overall impoundment structures;
  • Minimal operational footprint through optimum management practices applied to residue storage areas integrated with water management practices;
  • Minimal long-term environmental impact through closure considerations forming an integral part of design and operation.
The outcome from this workshop will be documented and made available to all participants. The approaches identified will inform and assist the IAI Bauxite & Alumina Committee in developing a set of residue management best practices across the differing circumstances facing the global industry.

The IAI is the global forum of the world's aluminium producers. The Institute has 28 member companies and they are represented on the IAI Board of Directors by their CEOs. Together the IAI member companies cover up to 70% primary production and all major producers.
Through the IAI, the aluminium industry aims to promote a wider understanding of its activities and demonstrate its responsibility in relation to all key sustainability issues - environmental, health, safety and recycling.  It seeks to enhance market opportunities through promotion of sustainability of products and the industry’s processes.
